WebAlphabet Lithuanian ABC is based on Latin. The first alphabet was introduced in the Cathecismus written by Martynas Mažvydas in 1547. The current Lithuanian alphabet consists of 32 letters: the Latin characters with extra nasal letters (ą, ę, į, ų) and letters with diacritics (č, š, ž, ė, ū), which are set in the following order: Lietuvių kalbos abėcėlė – modifikuota ir papildyta lotyniškoji abėcėlė, sudaryta iš 32 pagrindinių raidžių. Anot kalbininko G. Subačiaus, ė raidė yra unikali, jos neturi jokia kita pasaulio kalba. Vis dėlto raidė ė dar naudojama bent jau šajenų kalboje (tarimas kitas). Pagal 1997 metų Lietuvių kalbos instituto rekomendacijas, svetimvardžiuose taip pat vartojamos raidės q, w, x, kiek rečiau – ä, ö, ü, æ, å, ø ir kitos panašios.
