So something is probably very wrong with your keyboard key assignments in FSX settings. Make sure that the F1, F2, F3 and F4 keys have the right assignments. Open FSX Settings>Controls>Engines and look for: Throttle (Cut) = F1.

It's not a requirement. The keyboard and mouse are very functional and user-friendly. Flight control commands are only localized at the numpad so moving the plane will not be so hard to memorize. F1-F4 is used for throttle. F5-F8 are for flaps. F9-F11 are airplane views.
