That's not to say that it won't work with kinks, often it does. When it doesn't work however, non-tangent conditions are usually the culprit. If you're using AutoCAD 2012 in a suite, try editing the geometry in Inventor Fusion.

This makes it difficult to predict what will happen when you try to apply fillets or chamfers and in some cases it's just not possible.
